PRIVATE ATLANTIC FOREST NATURAL HERITAGE RESERVE RPPN ESTAÇÃO VERACEL

Logo

RPPN Estação Veracel, created and maintained by Veracel Celulose, is the largest Private Atlantic Forest Natural Heritage Reserve in the Brazilian Northeast. It is located in the municipalities of Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabrália in the south of Bahia.

There are more than 6,000 hectares of preserved Atlantic Forest. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has recognized RPPN Estação Veracel as a World Natural Heritage Site for its important role in protecting globally endangered species of fauna.

Estação Veracel represents the conservation and maintenance of life in all its manifestations. It houses 115 natural springs and is responsible for ecosystem services that go beyond its borders.

It promotes the maintenance of natural pollinators for the surrounding communities in their agroforestry production, connects forest fragments forming corridors that allow genetic exchange and the viability of life and contributes to the climate balance in the region and the planet.

Estação Veracel is an inexhaustible source of research! It is a protected and monitored natural environment where scientific research and environmental education activities are carried out with children and young people from schools in the surrounding communities.

bird watching at RPPN Estação Veracel

RPPN Estação Veracel is a privileged place for bird watching. It is considered a key bird conservation area by BirdLife International, an environmental organization based in the United Kingdom, sheltering species such as the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja), one of the largest birds of prey in the world, the crejoá (Cotinga maculata) and pica-pau-de-coleira (Celeus torquatus), among others (see photos below).

The Estação Veracel Bird Observatory aims to promote the scientific knowledge, education and environmental awareness aimed at conservation in one of the most threatened regions of the Atlantic Forest and with the richest biodiversity. The researches include the monitoring of nests and endangered birds, the census inventory and ringing of species.

WE PROMOTE FAUNA CONSERVATION WITH INTERACTIVITY

Our culture of native fauna conservation in our region, typically from the Atlantic Forest, goes beyond the borders of our planted eucalyptus forests, our RPPN Estação Veracel and the 90 thousand hectares of preserved Atlantic Forest of which we are the guardians.

Based on the #AmigosdaFauna campaign, we dialogue with our stakeholders, introducing a native animal inhabiting the territory on our social networks monthly, its features, the importance of its conservation, always bringing information and proposals for actions for everyone to know and collaborate in conservation of the species.

RPPN Estação Veracel uses camera traps to record images of wild animals with minimal interference in their routine. The cameras have motion sensors that are activated by the presence of animals. The images captured by the camera are included in a database about wild animal population circulating in the reserve. With this method, several snapshots of rare animals in the wild have been made.

The Management Plan at RPPN Estação Veracel

The Management Plan is the technical document that lists all the general objectives of RPPN Estação Veracel, establishing its zoning and rules to guide and regulate its use. During its development, we have considered approaches related to climate change in line with the Local Plan for Conservation and Recovery of the Atlantic Forest (PMMA) of the city of Porto Seguro. This is a joint effort to preserve biodiversity and value life.

    RECOGNITION OF BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

The biodiversity conservation work carried out at the RPPN Estação Veracel has granted the company the FSC® C017612 (Forest Stewardship Council) Ecosystem Services Procedure seal. We are the first in the pulp and paper industry to receive this distinction. The FSC® certification recognizes and values the high performance of companies and organizations using natural resources without depleting them. This is one of our sustainable development pillars and is aligned with our purpose as a company.
